Man Sentenced For Killing His Girlfriend Over R15 000 Lobola Money
Tragic Lobola Dispute Leads to Life Sentence for Johannesburg Man in Shocking Gender-Based Violence Case
A dispute over R15,000 in lobola money tragically ended in the death of a Johannesburg woman, as revealed in a recent court case.
On 12 March 2024, during a heated argument about lobola money, Louis Serenetra Moyo, 49, fatally attacked Thobile Grace Khoza, 41, with a series of violent actions, ultimately stabbing her multiple times.
The couple, who had been living together since 2020, had argued over funds in Thobile’s bank account that Louis intended to use for lobola payments.

After the brutal attack, Louis locked the room and fled the scene, leaving Thobile to die. Her body was discovered three days later by the landlord, alerted by a strong odor and the presence of flies.
Upon his arrest, Louis was found in possession of Thobile’s bank card, identity document, and cellphone.
In court, Louis admitted to the charges, describing the attack as a “fit of rage” but acknowledging it was premeditated.

The state highlighted that Thobile had a right to feel safe in her home and condemned the betrayal of that trust. Judge Dosio emphasized the need for severe punishment in cases of gender-based violence, which remains a major issue in South Africa, stressing that the justice system must act strongly to deter such crimes.
Louis received a life sentence for the murder and an additional six-month sentence for being in the country unlawfully.
This case underscores the urgency of addressing gender-based violence and enforcing stronger penalties for offenders in South Africa.
