Lucky Dube, South Africa’s best-selling reggae artist, left an indelible mark on the music industry with hits like Prisoner, a top-selling album in the 1980s and 90s.

His shift from mbaqanga to reggae, inspired by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, earned him international recognition.

His compilation Serious Reggae Business was especially successful in Ghana, and Dube won over 20 awards during his career. Tragically, his life was cut short in a senseless carjacking in Johannesburg.

Dube was shot while dropping off his son in the Rosettenville suburb. The gunmen later confessed they mistook him for a Nigerian and shot him while attempting to steal his car.

The murder sent shockwaves through South Africa and led to the arrest of five men, with three eventually found guilty.

New details emerged during the trial that painted a heartbreaking picture of Dube’s final moments.

Ludwe Gxowa, one of the attackers, grabbed Dube’s hands as he tried to shift gears in an attempt to escape. In the struggle, Dube managed to press the car’s horn, but Sfiso Mhlanga, seated in the back, shot him.

Gxowa briefly released Dube, only for Mhlanga to fire another fatal shot.

Thabo Maruping, who was with Mhlanga, Gxowa, and Mbuti Mabe during the botched hijacking, testified against them after turning state witness.

He detailed the events leading to Dube’s death, revealing that the group had been involved in multiple carjackings that same night. Earlier, they hijacked a Ford Ranger in Cleveland, Johannesburg, before turning their attention to Dube’s Chrysler 300C.

Despite the confusion and horror of the night, Dube’s calm and brave attempt to protect his children left a lasting impression on all who followed the case.

His untimely death marked a tragic end to the life of one of South Africa’s most beloved musicians, whose legacy continues to inspire fans around the world.
