Former Finance Minister and Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni Passes Away at 65

The Mboweni family has sadly announced the passing of former finance minister and Reserve Bank governor, Tito Mboweni, who died at the age of 65 after a short illness.

According to a statement released late on Saturday night, Mboweni passed away in a Johannesburg hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Mboweni, a trailblazer in South Africa’s political and economic landscape, made history as the first black governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), a role he assumed in 1999, succeeding Chris Stals.

His decade-long leadership at the SARB followed a distinguished period as labour minister in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet between 1994 and 1999.

His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in South Africa’s post-apartheid history, as Mboweni was instrumental in shaping the country’s economic policies during pivotal years of its transition.
