President Ramaphosa Apologizes for Misleading Alexandra Residents on Housing Promise

President Cyril Ramaphosa has apologized for creating the impression that his government would build 1 million houses specifically for the people of Alexandra.

The apology came during a National Assembly session, prompted by EFF leader Julius Malema, who questioned the progress since Ramaphosa’s 2019 promise.

Ramaphosa clarified that the 1 million houses were a national five-year target, not solely for Alexandra, where only 40,000 houses were planned.

He admitted that the target was unrealistic due to the lack of available land in Alexandra. Ramaphosa also acknowledged that the national target was not met, with only 240,000 houses built.

In response to Malema’s call for an apology to the residents of Alexandra, Ramaphosa expressed regret for any misunderstanding and offered condolences for the recent death of EFF leader Moshe Mphahlele during a housing protest.
