Durban Police Foil Cash-in-Transit Robbery Attempt

Dramatic Shootout in Durban Thwarts Cash-in-Transit Robbers

In a dramatic turn of events today, Tuesday, June 4, 2024, two suspected cash-in-transit robbers were fatally shot during a shootout with police in Phoenix, Durban. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Following a cash-in-transit heist in Kranskop on Monday afternoon, a multidisciplinary team from the South African Police Service (SAPS) launched a manhunt for the suspects. The team comprised officers from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, Provincial Tracking and Tracing Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT), and K9 Unit.

After an extensive overnight search, authorities located the suspects at Bhamshela in Tongaat. The suspects disregarded police orders to stop, leading to a high-speed chase. The chase ended when the suspects’ vehicle crashed into a lamp pole on Phoenix Highway.

A shootout erupted as the suspects emerged from the vehicle and opened fire on the police. Two suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange. One was found near the crashed vehicle, while the other succumbed to his injuries inside a residence he had entered while firing at officers.

Police Recover Weapons and Cash

The SAPS recovered an arsenal from the suspects, including three rifles, a pistol, and a significant amount of ammunition. An undisclosed amount of cash, presumably stolen during the Kranskop robbery, was also seized.

One injured suspect was apprehended later at a nearby block of flats. The search for the remaining suspects is ongoing, with police following blood trails into the bushes.

Thankfully, no police officers were injured during the shootout. However, a police vehicle sustained bullet damage.

Public Assistance Sought

Authorities have issued a call to nearby hospitals and medical centers to report any patients with suspected gunshot wounds.

The SAPS is urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspects to contact their nearest police station or the crime stop number 08600 10111.
