The Africa Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is currently seeking a student intern to work at its Johannesburg Office.
This internship will focus on gender-based violence and health rights in South Africa, with a particular focus on enforced and coerced sterilization of women living with HIV.

Responsibilities
The intern will primarily focus on desk research related to women’s rights in South Africa. The role will include conducting research, monitoring press coverage, and compiling reports, as well as data management and analysis. The intern will also be responsible for drafting documents related to human rights issues in South Africa and may be asked to attend external meetings. Other projects may arise that match the intern’s interests and abilities.
Qualifications
Applicants must be enrolled students for the duration of the internship term. Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable applicants with strong attention to detail are encouraged to apply. A strong interest in human rights, particularly in South Africa and Southern Africa, is essential. Relevant coursework is desirable, and computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, internet applications) and internet research skills are essential. Applicants must be proficient in English, both in reading and writing.
Compensation
Interns will receive a gross monthly stipend of R 6,000 per month, which will be pro-rated based on the number of hours they work. This stipend will help offset living expenses in accordance with HRW policy. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
