World’s First Openly Gay Imam, Mushin Hendricks, Killed in Gqeberha

The Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities has strongly condemned the killing of Mushin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay Imam.
Hendricks was tragically gunned down while attending a wedding in Gqeberha. A passionate advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, he played a pivotal role in numerous organizations and founded the inclusive Masjidul Ghurbaah mosque, which promoted non-segregated worship.
Despite legal protections, the department acknowledges that discrimination and hate crimes remain prevalent in South Africa.
Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Steve Letsike has called on law enforcement to act swiftly in bringing those responsible to justice.
