Veteran Singer and Dancer Winnie Khumalo Passes Away at 51

South Africa mourns the loss of beloved veteran singer and dancer Winnie Khumalo, who passed away at the age of 51.
Her family confirmed the news, with her son, Thando Khumalo, and sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, sharing details about her sudden passing. Winnie reportedly fell ill and was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, where she was pronounced dead.
Born in Mofolo North, Soweto, Winnie began her illustrious career at just 15 years old, releasing iconic albums like Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina. She later explored gospel music with Izono Zami and collaborated with South African legends such as Brenda Fassie, DJ Cleo, and Bongo Maffin.
After a brief hiatus to focus on her family, Winnie made a triumphant return in 2007 with the chart-topping album I Just Wanna Live My Life, earning gold status and multiple award nominations.
Her music continued to reflect her personal journey, with her latest album, Woman, addressing themes of betrayal, family, and resilience.
Winnie also made her mark in television and film, featuring in Muvhango, Mponeng, and Madluphuthu. Her career highlights included a tribute to Brenda Fassie and a memorable performance with former president Jacob Zuma during the 2009 ANC campaigns.
Arthur Mafokate, a fellow musician, praised her as an inspiration and pillar of support throughout his career.
Winnie’s legacy lives on through her music, her talented children, and the profound impact she made on South Africa’s entertainment industry. She will be deeply missed.
