Mapisa-Nqakula’s Legal Battle Over Phala Phala Inquiry and Corruption Charges

Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the former parliamentary speaker, is facing corruption charges related to alleged kickbacks she received as Defence Minister.
She claims her legal issues began after she initiated a parliamentary inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala scandal.
Despite the inquiry’s findings, which suggested Ramaphosa may have violated office conduct, the ANC blocked any impeachment proceedings.
Mapisa-Nqakula, who is charged with 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering, seeks more information from the state regarding her case.
She argues that critical evidence is being withheld, and claims the prosecution is based on weak evidence and media leaks.
The state denies these claims, asserting that their investigation is legitimate, and they oppose her requests for further disclosure.
The case continues in the Pretoria High Court.
