EFF Releases Statement on Operation Vala Umgodi
The EFF has released a statement regarding the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi, condemning what it describes as inhumane treatment of illegal miners.
While acknowledging the serious impact of illegal mining on local economies, the environment, and public safety, the party emphasized that enforcement efforts should not come at the cost of basic human rights and dignity.
The statement criticized the government for years of neglect and inadequate regulation, pointing to abandoned mine shafts that have become sites for illegal activity.
EFF called for a more balanced approach that addresses the root causes of illegal mining, holding mining companies accountable for failing to secure and rehabilitate disused mines.
