Rising Tensions in Mozambique Push Border Officials to Flee Into South Africa
Lebombo Border Closure as Mozambican Protests Turn Violent
South African authorities quickly reopened the Lebombo border post this morning, thinking tensions had eased in Mozambique.
However, escalating violence soon forced Mozambican border officials to seek refuge in South Africa after protests intensified.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Dr. Michael Masiapato, announced that the border had to be closed again for safety.

Masiapato explained that by 8 a.m., protesters on the Mozambican side had escalated their actions, burning offices at Kilometre 4 and looting trucks.
As protesters mobilized toward Maputo, officials had to abandon their posts, with 15 Mozambican officials seeking shelter on the South African side.
In response, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, urged calm, emphasizing the need for peace to allow Mozambique’s constitutional court to validate recent election results.
