According to ABSA’s latest Merchant Spend Analytics report, South Africans are increasing their spending in 2024, with a 3% rise in month-to-month spending and transaction volume.
Categories like home and garden, as well as business supplies, have seen growth rates of 14% and 16%, respectively.
While physical clothing stores face competition from fast fashion and international retailers, local shoppers continue to splurge on a mix of online and in-store deals.

Credit card spending has notably risen by 10%, showing a preference for credit over debit as consumers finance larger purchases.
