Families Of Zama Zamas Stuck Underground Frustrated

Families Plead for Safety of Trapped Illegal Miners in Orkney as Police Block Supplies

The sister of an illegal miner trapped underground in Orkney, North West, is urgently calling for the safety of her family and others, fearing they may starve.

Over 500 illegal miners emerged yesterday after the SANDF and SAPS blocked communities from delivering food, water, and essentials to those still underground.

Thandeka, whose brother has been trapped underground for nearly four months, shared her concerns.

She explained that while her brother usually resurfaces every two months, this time, he has been gone far too long.

She worries about his ability to access food and take his daily medication amid the police operation, especially as he has previously described the extreme heat underground.

She hopes authorities will ensure the safety of those trapped, emphasizing that they are still human beings.

Thandeka’s family, especially her mother, is struggling. Her mother, who has a heart condition, has been in and out of the hospital, stressed over the situation.

Thandeka added that her brother is their breadwinner, and while they are prepared for arrests, they want him alive.

North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that some zama zamas who resurfaced in Orkney appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court today, with over 300 more set to appear soon.

The situation remains tense as families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.
