Investigation Recommends Disciplinary Action for Staff Overhandling Racial Complaints at Pretoria High School for Girls

An independent investigation into allegations of racism at Pretoria High School for Girls has called for disciplinary measures against staff members who failed to address learners’ complaints adequately.
The investigation, which examined incidents reported since 2019, revealed a culture where some students believed racism existed in subtle forms.
Earlier this year, 12 learners were suspended following complaints from black students about a WhatsApp group chat set up by white students to discuss them.
The Gauteng Department of Education commissioned the inquiry amid public outcry, ultimately finding that staff had not taken complaints seriously.
The law firm conducting the investigation has recommended action against those staff members for breaching policies related to the Employment Equity Act and the South African Schools Act.
Furthermore, the Gauteng Department of Education plans to implement the investigation’s recommendations and provide counseling to affected learners.
