Zola’s 'Devil' Laid to Rest as Community Remembers His Unique Legacy

Known to his family as Sipho Khumalo, but to the Zola and Mndeni communities as “Devil,” this feared local figure left a lasting impact with his collection of snakes, which he used to intimidate and maintain discipline.

While he was laid to rest today, few neighbors attended his funeral, preferring to observe from their gates, wary of his infamous snakes.

A neighbor explained that while they didn’t dislike him, Devil’s presence had been unsettling for over a decade.

“He had four huge pythons and other venomous snakes he kept at home. He even brought the pythons into shops with him,” she said.

Yet despite the fear he instilled, many in the community believed Devil was effective in managing crime. Tebogo Mbatha, a former addict, shared how Devil once locked him in a room with two pythons as punishment for stealing.

The experience led Tebogo to change his life, confessing to his wrongs and overcoming addiction.

Devil’s family believes he sensed his death was near. His uncle, John Khumalo, revealed that three weeks ago, Devil began relocating his animals—including his beloved pythons, owls, ducks, and tortoises—to the snake park.

“He had a deep love for animals from a young age, and after accepting his calling, he found more comfort in their company than with people,” John shared.

Despite his reputation, his family remembers him as a kind-hearted individual misunderstood by his community.
