Two Arrested in Mob Attack After Woman Set on Fire

Limpopo police have swiftly arrested two suspects involved in a brutal mob attack that left a woman and her home set ablaze in Majosi village, Mopani.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Khawulani section of the village, where a 43-year-old woman was targeted by a group of attackers.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a group of four men and one woman approached the victim’s home, demanding to know the whereabouts of her husband.

Fearing for her safety, the woman locked herself inside, but the group forcibly entered her home.

Ledwaba explained that when the woman responded that she didn’t know where her husband was, the attackers doused her with petrol and set her on fire.

Following the horrific act, the group also torched her two-roomed house and a nearby shack.

The attackers attempted to burn down another house but were interrupted by police, who quickly responded to the scene, forcing the group to flee. The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Following the attack, a manhunt was launched by Hlanganani Police, Vala Umgodi Task Team, and other local police units.

Two suspects were arrested—one, a 32-year-old man believed to be the ringleader, was nabbed at his residence in Majosi village early Thursday morning, while his 31-year-old accomplice was arrested later that day in Masiya village.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Tiyani Magistrate Court on Monday, 21 October 2024, facing charges of attempted murder and arson. Police investigations are ongoing.
