PICS | Funeral of Former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni Underway in Limpopo

The funeral of the late Tito Mboweni, South Africa’s former finance minister and first black Governor of the SA Reserve Bank, is currently taking place in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

Mboweni passed away last Saturday at the age of 65 after a brief illness.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the eulogy at the ceremony, joined by other notable speakers, including Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, Mboweni’s colleague Colin Coleman, his mentee Monhla Hlahla, close friend Dr. Ngoako Ramatlhodi, and his children, Sello, Tumi, and Pule Mboweni.

Earlier this week, President Ramaphosa declared a special official funeral category 2 in honor of Mboweni.

The service is being held at the Nkowankowa Stadium, with proceedings broadcast across multiple platforms despite a delayed start.

Mboweni leaves behind a legacy of dedicated public service, both in the finance sector and broader South African politics.
