Cape Town Urges Residents to Boil Water After Discolouration

The City of Cape Town has advised residents to boil their tap water before using it due to reports of discoloured water in 15 suburbs.

This temporary issue is linked to maintenance work on the bulk water network, which required parts of the system to be shut down for repairs.

The affected areas reported on 17 October include Khayelitsha, Strand, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Belthorn Estate, Lentegeur, Lotus River, Claremont, Pelikan Park, Portland, Philippi, Crawford, Macassar, Ikwezi Park, and Primrose Park.

According to the City, some residents have already noticed improvements in their water quality.

Ongoing water sampling is being conducted to ensure the water meets SANS241 standards, which guarantees safe drinking water.

The aesthetic qualities, such as clarity and taste, are also being tested to ensure the water is suitable for consumption.

To stay safe, residents are advised to:

  • Boil discoloured water for one minute and allow it to cool before drinking.
  • If boiling is not possible, mix one teaspoon of unperfumed household bleach with 20-25 litres of water and let it stand for at least two hours.
  • Store purified water in clean, covered containers.

Updates on water quality will be provided as further tests are completed.
