Chris Hani’s Killer Janusz Walus to Be Deported to Poland

Janusz Walus, the convicted murderer of South African struggle icon Chris Hani, will be deported to Poland on Friday, following the completion of his parole.
Walus assassinated Hani in 1993, a pivotal moment in South Africa’s democratic transition, causing nationwide outrage. Initially sentenced to death, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Released on parole in December 2022 after a Constitutional Court ruling, Walus no longer holds South African documents.
The Department of Home Affairs will oversee his deportation.
The government has also acknowledged a request from Hani’s family for an inquest into the assassination.
