Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has announced exciting news: Formula One will return to South Africa!

In a recent discussion with motorsport social media influencer LalliesF1, McKenzie stated, “I can tell you this, F1 is definitely coming to South Africa.”

He emphasized that F1 officials have expressed their interest and outlined their requirements, which the government is ready to fulfill.

The last Formula One race held in South Africa dates back to 1993 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, where legendary drivers like Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna raced.

Since then, the sport has continued to flourish globally, hosting multiple races in countries like the USA and Italy, but Africa has been left out—until now.

There is ongoing speculation about the location of the South African Grand Prix, with Cape Town and Johannesburg as potential hosts.

Cape Town successfully held a Formula-E Street race in 2023, indicating it could be a contender. Meanwhile, Johannesburg’s historical connection to Formula One makes it a sentimental choice for fans.

Minister McKenzie has expressed his determination to make this event happen, stating it would be a “failure” if he couldn’t secure it.

He noted that the decision between Cape Town and Johannesburg is still under debate, leaving fans eagerly awaiting more updates on this thrilling return of Formula One to South African soil.
