Dr. Nasiphi Moya Set to Become Tshwane’s New Mayor with ANC Support

ActionSA councillor Dr. Nasiphi Moya is poised to be elected as the new mayor of Tshwane this Wednesday, following the announcement by the African National Congress (ANC) that it will support her candidacy.

Moya’s election comes after former mayor Cillers Brink was ousted through a motion of no confidence last month, a decision that saw 120 councillors voting in favor while 87 opposed it.

Former Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba supports Dr Nasiphi.

Here are facts about Dr. Nasiphi Moya:

  • Political Beginnings: Moya began her political journey during her first year at university.
  • Early Life and Education: She hails from Mpikwana in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, and later moved to Cape Town, where she earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in politics, public policy, and administration.
  • Advanced Degrees: Moya holds a Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Cape Town and a PhD in Political Science from the University of the Western Cape.
  • DA Involvement: She joined the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2011, serving as the party’s national manager of performance development and management systems.
  • City of Tshwane Roles: In 2016, Moya became the group head in the Office of the Chief Whip in the City of Tshwane, and in May 2020, she was appointed as the chief of staff in the mayor’s office.
  • Shift to ActionSA: Moya left the DA in 2021 to join ActionSA, where she initially served as chief governance director. In January 2023, she was sworn in as a PR councillor and subsequently elected deputy mayor.

The ANC’s support for Moya aligns with their strategic partnerships, as they seek to strengthen their influence in Tshwane.

In contrast, DA leader John Steenhuisen has called for the reinstatement of Brink, arguing that he was removed for his effective governance rather than any allegations of wrongdoing.

This political maneuvering highlights the ongoing dynamics within Tshwane’s municipal leadership as the city prepares for a new chapter under Moya’s potential stewardship.
