Award-winning Afro-pop singer Asanda “Msaki” Mvana recently opened up about how her relationship with radio and TV personality Smash Afrika almost ended her music career.
Last year, Msaki found herself at the center of controversy after reports surfaced claiming she was involved in an extramarital affair with the 5FM presenter, leading to bullying and significant career setbacks.
Speaking with Relebogile Mobotja on the “Unpacked” podcast, Msaki shared that Smash Afrika failed to protect her when the rumors began circulating.

As a result, she lost millions by canceling gigs and faced intense public backlash. Msaki made it clear that she had no part in Smash Afrika’s divorce from his ex-wife, Kefiloe Mdutyulwa, who is the daughter of actress Rami Chaune.
She revealed that Smash Afrika, despite having a chance to clarify the situation, chose not to speak to the media or defend her, leaving her to face the harsh criticism alone.
Msaki expressed her frustration, explaining that Smash Afrika was unconcerned about the impact the rumors would have on her career and reputation.

She recalled how even her friends urged him to take control of the narrative, but he remained passive. As the scandal unfolded, Msaki was labeled as a homewrecker, which deeply affected her both personally and professionally.
She described the experience as devastating, admitting she still feels sick about being portrayed as the woman who broke a marriage.
The scandal had severe financial consequences for Msaki, causing her to lose R10 million in just two months as her momentum as an artist came to a halt. She was forced to cancel shows and return money due to the public’s reaction to the rumors.
A month after the story broke, Msaki’s relationship with Smash Afrika ended. She revealed that while she faced bullying and name-calling, Smash Afrika refused to address the rumors or clear her name.
Instead, he seemed to enjoy the increased attention and growing social media following, while Msaki’s career and reputation suffered greatly.
