16-Year-Old Girl Dies in Overloaded Minibus Taxi Accident

A tragic accident occurred on Swartklip Road, near Mitchells Plain, on Friday morning when an allegedly overloaded minibus taxi transporting schoolchildren overturned.

A 16-year-old girl died from her injuries, while other pupils were taken to local hospitals.

The 25-year-old driver, who did not have a valid driving license and was driving an unroadworthy vehicle, was arrested. The minibus was reportedly carrying 29 pupils.

This incident follows another school transport accident in Manenberg earlier in the week, in which 14 schoolchildren were injured after a collision between a microbus taxi and a truck.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured. Investigations are ongoing into both incidents.
