“No stage for Chris Brown in South Africa” – Women for Change Condemns Chris Brown’s Upcoming Concert

Women for Change Raises Concerns Over Chris Brown's Upcoming Concert in South Africa

Women for Change, a non-profit organization advocating for the rights of women and children in South Africa, has expressed deep concern over Chris Brown’s scheduled concert on 14 December 2024 in Johannesburg.

This announcement comes just days after the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Chris Brown’s history of v!olence against women, including his 2009 arrest for assaulting Rihanna, starkly contrasts with the values of the Anti-GBV campaign.

South Africa, where femicide rates are five times higher than the global average, cannot afford to send a message that undermines the fight against abuse.

Hosting Chris Brown raises serious concerns about the impact on survivors of abuse and the efforts being made to combat GBV in the country.

Over the years, Brown has faced multiple legal issues, including his guilty plea for the assault on Rihanna in 2009, for which he was sentenced to probation and domestic violence counseling.

He has also been involved in other legal disputes, including a separate assault case and sexual assault allegations.

On 27 October 2024, Investigation Discovery will launch “Chris Brown: A History of Violence” as part of its “No Excuse for Abuse” campaign, further highlighting the singer’s troubled past.

Women for Change has questioned how the South African government granted a visa to a convicted abuser, emphasizing the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions.

They urge concert organizers and decision-makers to reconsider hosting Chris Brown and call on the public to support efforts in creating a safer and more respectful society for women and girls.

The organization’s stance highlights the importance of aligning public events with values that support survivors and discourage the glorification of individuals with a history of violence.
