Oscar-Winning Actress Maggie Smith Passes Away at 89

Oscar-winning British actress Maggie Smith, renowned for her seven-decade career in film and theatre, passed away peacefully in a London hospital on Friday at the age of 89.

Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, confirmed the heartbreaking news.

“It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Friday, 27 September,” they shared in a statement.

A private person, Smith was with her family and friends during her final moments. The family expressed their gratitude to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital staff for their exceptional care.

They also thanked everyone for their kind messages, requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Maggie Smith was a legend in British film and theatre, earning numerous accolades, including two Oscars, three Golden Globes, five Baftas, and a Tony Award.

She gained global fame for her portrayal of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in Downton Abbey.

Born on 28 December 1934, Smith made her stage debut in 1952 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

She won her first Oscar for Best Actress in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969 and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Othello. Other notable roles include Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter, Diana Barrie in California Suite, and Muriel Donnelly in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
