VIDEO: Mzansi Reacts To Doja Cat’s Performance, “Zulu Genes Are Too Strong”

Doja Cat's Dance Moves Spark Excitement in South Africa: Fans Claim Her as Their Own

Doja Cat, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, recently set social media ablaze with a video of her dancing in a style reminiscent of Maskandi artists.

The clip, which shows the US rapper performing Paint The Town Red, quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), with South Africans eagerly claiming her as one of their own.

Fans were thrilled by her dance moves, which they said reminded them of popular performers from KwaZulu-Natal like Big Zulu, Sjava, and Khuzani Mpungose.

These stars are known for similar moves, often pulling up their pants as if preparing for traditional Zulu dances during performances.

Maskandi musicians also favor wearing Carvella sandals, Brentwood pants, and colorful towels on stage, with some fans even speculating that Doja Cat was wearing a Brentwood trouser in the video.

Doja Cat’s Zulu heritage has long been a topic of interest. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a legendary South African actor known for his role in Sarafina, while her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, is American.

Dumisani met Doja’s mother while touring with the Sarafina cast in New York during the 1990s. After their split, Doja Cat was raised in the U.S. by her mother.

In the past, Doja Cat made headlines when she revealed she had never met her father. Dumisani, however, claimed that he had tried for years to connect with her, but his attempts were blocked by her management.

Despite the media storm, Dumisani later said that they were in contact and even planning a family reunion in South Africa.

In a radio interview, he emphasized that the rumors of him being an absent father were false, and they now communicate by phone.

The video of Doja Cat’s Maskandi-style dance has only deepened the connection fans feel to her South African roots, with many eagerly awaiting her potential visit to the country.
