SA Rugby Mourns the Tragic Death of Rugby Player Ashwill Sauls

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander has expressed deep condolences following the tragic death of Ashwill Sauls, a 24-year-old club rugby player from Robertson.

Sauls passed away during a match over the weekend after sustaining severe injuries.

Reports confirm that Sauls, who played as a fullback, suffered multiple broken ribs after a legal tackle. The injuries led to a punctured lung and internal bleeding.

Despite being rushed to the nearest hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival.

Alexander shared heartfelt words, saying, “Ashwill’s passing has shocked the entire rugby community. At just 24, he was a key member of the Robertson Rangers for five years, known for his dedication and love for the game. His untimely death during a friendly match against Montagu RFC has left us all in mourning.”

Alexander added that the loss is deeply felt by Sauls’ teammates, coaches, and everyone who knew him. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this heartbreaking time.

Ashwill’s memory will remind us to cherish each moment and to play the game with the passion he did. Rest in peace, Ashwill. You will be dearly missed.”

The Boland Rugby Union president, Bennie van Rooi, also confirmed that they are committed to providing full support to Sauls’ family and the club.

He requested privacy for the family as they cope with the loss of their loved one.

In addition to being a talented rugby player, Sauls was a popular content creator on TikTok, where he had nearly 17,000 followers and close to 238,000 likes.

The rugby union has urged everyone to avoid sharing insensitive comments about the tragedy on social media.
