MPUMALANGA : Unlicensed taxi driver Nkosinathi Sibanyoni has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for culpable homicide.

Sibanyoni was transporting schoolchildren when a tragic accident occurred in February 2022. After parking his taxi on the roadside near Elukwatini, he left the vehicle unattended while helping a child cross the road.

The taxi, which had children inside, rolled into a nearby river, leading to the deaths of nine children. An investigation revealed safety measures were not followed, resulting in Sibanyoni’s conviction.

KWAZULU-NATAL : A shocking shooting occurred on Florida Road in Durban, where an off-duty police officer shot and killed his girlfriend outside her workplace.

The officer continued firing as she tried to flee, killing two other individuals in the process. Metro police on patrol shot the suspect, who was later declared dead in the hospital.

The motive for the attack is still under investigation, though domestic issues are suspected.

GAUTENG : Three foreign nationals—Emery Niyomuremyi from Burundi, Amina Lameck from Malawi, and Kelechi Maduike from Nigeria—appeared in Hatfield Magistrates Court for violating the Immigration Act.

They were arrested after a raid on Babel and Ocean Basket restaurants in Menlyn Mall, where they were working illegally.

Their cases have been postponed for formal bail applications, while the manager of Babel, Raui Kobeissi, paid a fine to secure his release.
