South Africa’s Beloved Educator William Smith Passes Away

PERTH, AUSTRALIA — William Smith, South Africa’s cherished Maths and Science teacher, has passed away at the age of 85 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

He died at his home in Perth, Australia, surrounded by family.

Smith, a household name in South Africa, is renowned for making Mathematics and Science accessible to even the most marginalized through his pioneering educational television programs.

His most notable work was presented on SABC TV during the 1990s, particularly during national examination periods when his program was broadcast during prime time.

Smith’s educational journey began at Union High School in the Eastern Cape. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Chemistry from Rhodes University, followed by an honors degree in Chemistry from the same institution.

Demonstrating exceptional dedication, Smith completed a master’s degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in just seven months.

Throughout his career, Smith secured financial backing to support his ambitious TV projects, including the groundbreaking program “The Learning Channel.”

This initiative served as an open South African school, offering instruction in Physical Science, Mathematics, Biology, and English, and left a lasting impact on countless students across the country.

Smith’s innovative approach to education and his commitment to making learning accessible will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of learning from him.
