WATCH: Jacob Zuma Discusses uMkhonto we Sizwe Political Party and ANC Legacy

In a revealing interview with NewzroomAfrika, former South African President Jacob Zuma shed light on his decision to form a new political party, his ongoing relationship with the African National Congress (ANC), and his views on the current political landscape.

uMkhonto we Sizwe was the paramilitary wing of the African National Congress, and was founded by Nelson Mandela in the wake of the Sharpeville massacre. Its mission was to fight against the South African government. The group was also involved in foreign conflicts such as Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe), Namibia, and Angola.

Formation and Purpose of the New Party:

Jacob Zuma explained that the formation of the new party was not a unilateral decision but a collective one made within the alliance he was part of. He stressed that the move was aimed at providing an alternative means to fight for the rights of the oppressed, rather than appropriating the heritage of the ANC.

According to Zuma, the ANC had strayed from its mission, necessitating a different approach to address the complex issues facing the party and the country.

Relationship with the ANC:

Despite being the leader of the MK party, Zuma maintains that he is still a member of the ANC. He criticized some ANC leaders for voting against party policies in parliament and for their overall leadership, which he believes has harmed the party’s legacy and mission. Zuma’s actions, he asserts, are aimed at rescuing the ANC from what he views as a detrimental leadership.

Mission of the MK Party:

Zuma described the MK party as a vehicle to save the ANC and provide alternative leadership to continue the struggle for liberation. He emphasized that the current ANC leadership has failed to uphold the party’s historical mission, necessitating the establishment of the MK party.

Controversies and Leadership:

Addressing internal conflicts within the MK party, Zuma noted that disputes and disagreements are normal in any political organization. He confirmed his role in registering the party and dismissed claims of forgery regarding party registration documents. Zuma also denied allegations of receiving foreign funding, particularly from Russia, and stated that the party operates on the support of its members and his personal commitment.

Zuma’s Political Legacy and Role:

Zuma defended his continued involvement in politics despite his age, arguing that young people have not yet demonstrated their capability to lead the country effectively. He believes his experience and leadership remain valuable, rejecting suggestions that he should step aside for younger leaders.

Zuma emphasized that his actions are driven by a commitment to the country’s welfare and the preservation of the ANC’s legacy.

Health and Legal Issues:

Responding to questions about his health, which has been a point of contention in his legal battles, particularly the arms deal trial, Zuma maintained that health matters should be private. He suggested that concerns about his health are politically motivated and asserted that his health issues have been exaggerated by those seeking to undermine him.
