Why is internet down? – Major internet outage in South Africa

A major internet outage struck South Africa, affecting various network providers and services due to multiple subsea cable failures between South Africa and Europe.

This resulted in intermittent connectivity issues reported by users across the country.

Companies like Microsoft, Google, MTN, Vodacom, and WhatsApp, among others, experienced significant outage reports.

The West African Cable System was identified as one of the affected cables, possibly due to recent cable breaks in the Red Sea caused by a sunken ship’s anchor.

Cloudflare and Microsoft Azure acknowledged the network issues, with Cloudflare rerouting traffic for Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Despite some improvements by 15:00, issues persisted, with Vodacom confirming efforts to resolve the matter.
