Friday Deadline: IEC Warns Unregistered Voters to Register Ahead of 2024 General Elections

The Electoral Commission of South Africa has issued a warning to unregistered eligible voters, reminding them that they have until Friday, February 23, 2024, to register or validate their registration status.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the 2024 general elections will take place on May 29, 2024.

The IEC has been allocated an additional R2.3 billion by Treasury to organize the elections and has pledged to make every effort to ensure a smooth election day.

The voter registration drive, which includes various initiatives such as general registration weekends, overseas voter registration drives, and campus activations, has been successful. Currently, the voters’ roll for the 2024 general elections comprises 27.6 million voters.

Unregistered individuals and those needing to update their address details can do so by visiting the local municipality office of the Electoral Commission or using the online voter registration portal.

Following the proclamation of the election date, the IEC will publish the Election Timetable in the Government Gazette, outlining various cut-off dates for electoral activities such as certification of the voters’ roll, nomination of candidates, and applications for special votes.
